On Sale This Week

ON SALE FRI. JUN. 6th at NOON

The Gutter Twins - July 26, 2008

The Gutter Twins is a musical collaboration between rock musicians Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan. According to Pitchfork, "Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan are two of the most intimidating dudes in rock'n'roll, their lengthy discographies littered with bad drugs, bad women, and the violence (physical, emotional, and spiritual) that surrounds these bad situations." Filter says, "Dulli and Lanegan, two of today's greatest underappreciated frontmen, are hypnotic; narcotic." Their album, Saturnalia, has been critically praised and described as "an audial descent into the dark emotions that often lurk beneath the surface." - Blast Magazine

Spiritualized - July 29, 8pm

English space rock band, Spiritualized, is coming to the TLA on Tuesday, July 29th. What exactly is "space rock" you ask? Well its a style of music that originally referred to a group of early mostly British 1970s progressive rock and psychedelic bands like Hawkwind and Pink Floyd, characterised by slow, lengthy instrumental passages dominated by synthesisers, experimental guitar work and science fiction lyrical themes later transforming into an ambient form of pop music. Spiritualized's 1997 Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space was named Album of the Year by NME Magazine. For this tour they have a brand new album entitled Songs in A&E, which Pitchfork calls "Spiritualized's best work in 10 years" giving it a high rating of 8.4 and their coveted Best New Music stamp!

Duffy - August 6, 8pm

UK success, Duffy is coming to the states and she's coming to Philadelphia on August 6th at our very own TLA. Her album Rockferry is currently the top selling album in the UK in 2008. She's taken the UK by storm and hopes to repeat that success this summer in the US. After seeing her live, the UK Guardian says, "It is obligatory for any female singer of Duffy's ilk to be compared to Dusty Springfield, but the 1960s diva she most obviously recalls is the less venerated Lulu: her voice is a confident, gutsy rasp. "It's been fun, if not emotional," she says, announcing the last song and virtually reviewing herself in the process." Comparisons have been drawn to Amy Winehouse as well, but there is an innocent, an undeniable charm to Duffy that sets her apart from the unpredictable Amy Winehouse. Let Duffy charm her way into your heart at the TLA on Wednesday, August 6th.

Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations,Ticketmaster.com, LiveNation.com and Charge-by-Phone 215-336-2000/ 856-338-9000/ 302-984-2000.

Thursday, June 5th - The Kooks with the Morning Benders

SHOW IS SOLD OUT!!

Who are The Kooks you ask? Well if you haven't heard of them by now, you should be hearing of them shortly. They're pretty big in the blogosphere as well as their homeland of the U.K. Their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, sold over two million albums worldwide and has gone quadruple platinum, becoming the 5th highest selling album of 2006, as well as the 2nd biggest debut, second only to the Arctic Monkeys! Entertainment Weekly says, "This Brighton quartet has skill and charm … scrappy little melody bombs, mixing Beatles-y harmonies with a blast of punk aggression." Known for putting on a great live show, these boys will be at the TLA on Thursday, June 5th in support of their newest album, Konk, which hit stores on April 15th.

After a killer album like Inside In/Inside Out, Konk had a lot to live up to. But no worries for the Kooks, Konk is a hit. All Music Guide said, "the Kooks and this album are positively electrifying...Everything about this album shouts masterpiece, a set that will thrill listeners for years, nay decades, to come." Their breezy indie pop sound has been taken up a notch on Konk with the addition of heavier electric guitars. The Kooks could be considered infectious with the catchiness of their music, every song is meant to be a hit single. Sunshiney, pop tunes will fill the TLA on Thursday June 5th.

Saturday, June 7th - Swervedriver with Longwave and Terra Diablo

Swervedriver is an English alternative rock band from Oxford. Their sound was frequently compared to Sonic Youth, The Stooges, Dinosaur Jr, The Who, Catherine Wheel, and former labelmates My Bloody Valentine and Ride. After almost a decade of being off the radar, Swervedriver is back with a world tour. The band who brought the car song into the shoegaze era was formed in Britain in 1990 by vocalists/guitarists Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Adi Vines, and drummer Graham Bonner. Fusing the swirling textures of the shoegazer aesthetic with the more traditional boundaries of pop, the group debuted with a series of brilliant EPs -- Son of Mustang Ford, Rave Down, and Sandblasted -- before issuing their full-length debut, Raise, in 1991.
Their live shows are ones not to be missed. Wired Magazine reviewed a recent live show saying, "as much as Swervedriver's knotted ax tracks derive from Dinosaur Jr., The Stooges and other guitar legends, they remain strikingly original. The once-maligned "99th Dream" has emerged from the last decade a ragged psych-surf epic, and Swervedriver smoked it live." So come to the TLA on Saturday, June 7th to enjoy some classic 90's Swervedriver and prepare yourself for one hell of a live show.

Sunday, June 8th - The Breeders with special guest the Montana Boys

The Breeders are back with a new album under their belt. Mountain Battles was released on April 8th to critical success with Blender stating, "The result is slight but often gorgeous, as Deal’s wafting voice strikes upon melodies pretty and eerie." Kim Deal, founding member of the Breeders, hit commercial success in the 90's with her hit single "Cannonball." "Overglazed" off of Mountain Battles has been described by Rolling Stone as "the best indie-rock orgasm ever." So perhaps the Deal sisters have a new hit on their hands. Nonetheless, Mountain Battles is pretty great and an album "late Breeders fan Kurt Cobain would have loved."
Kim and Kelley put on a great live show, especially 6 years after their last album and now with a gorgeous new album to promote. The UK Guardian had this to say about twin sisters - Kim and Kelley's live show, "the Breeders are a beguiling force. New songs are seamlessly layered with old favourites, the quicksand rhythm of Overglazed nestling next to the fireworks of No Aloha and of Divine Hammer." After hearing the fantastic Mountain Battles, let's hope it's not another six years before a new Breeders album. But you never know, so be at the TLA on Sunday, June 8th for the Breeders because you may not get the opportunity to see them again.
