Wednesday, April 30th - Robyn with the Broadzilla DJs

Konichiwa Bitches!! I'm not just saying that to be funny, it's actually the name of Robyn's label and one of her most entertaining singles. Check out the video here. Who is Robyn you ask? Well remember that 90's mainstream pop hit "Show Me Love"? Yeah that's her, but her sound has evolved. Robyn has gone from mainstream pop to Swedish, indie-pop sweetheart. Her songs are entertaining and interesting, as well as totally danceable. It's pop with a little more attitude and a lot more creativity.

Leaving her 90's mainstream success in the U.S., she's coming back 10 years later on her own terms. Her latest album drops Tuesday, April 29th - the day before her Philadelphia show. Robyn's self-titled album has already been called this year's best pop album! She's this year's Annie, according to critics and the blogosphere which has risen her to indie fame. The Philadelphia Inquirer says Robyn's first album off her own record label is "an album full of terse, electro-flavored dance pop that recalls early Madonna, Norway's Annie, Missy Elliott and even the best of pre-train-wreck Britney." Stylus Magazine gave the album an A- and said, "If there's one European pop star who deserves worldwide success the most, it has to be Robyn." With the Broadzilla DJs opening the night, the Fillmore @ the TLA is sure to be a dance party on Wednesday, April 30th.

Sunday, April 13th - Baileys Get Together featuring Estelle with host John Legend

ESTELLE
The award-winning Estelle was the first artist signed to John Legend's new record label, Homeschool Records. You may have recently seen Kanye West featured in a video with a song soulstress at his side, well she was none other than the smooth Estelle and the single was "American Boy," which rcently hit number 1 on the UK charts. With heavy hitters like Wyclef Jean, will.i.am, Swizz Beatz, Mark Ronson, and Kanye West all collaborating on her new album, Shine is already a hit! The Times says, "There’s a nothing-to-lose confidence in these songs that defies resistance." Shine has received high ratings across the board.

Estelle writes her own songs and refuses to stick to just one style of music integrating hip-hop, soul, reggae and pop into her music. She has her won definition of soul music. So what is soul music to Estelle? "Music that you feel in your heart and your experience. You can't explain it, it just gets you. It's in the lyrics, the melody, the beat - you can't pull it apart." Estelle has drawn many comparisons to Lauryn Hill. When recently named Rolling Stone's Artist to Watch, they said "When Estelle jumps from singing the hook of the Will.i.am-produced soul-hop single, "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)," into a laid-back but feisty rap, it's nearly impossible not to mouth the words "Lauryn Hill" — even Wyclef Jean says Estelle's an artistic dead ringer for the Fugee." But mentor John Legend says "his éprotégé holds her own creatively." Sunday, April 13th at the Fillmore @ the TLA the darling of British soul will be performing for an intimate, special seated show.

Saturday, April 12th – Kathleen Edwards with Dan Wilson

KATHLEEN EDWARDS

The New York Times has praised singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards as a writer whose songs can "pare situations down to a few dozen words while they push country-rock towards its primal impulses of thump and twang." This Candadian musician made her first big emergence in 2003 with her debut album, Frailer, was started as an indie project that Kathleen recorded with her friends in the Ottawa music scene but soon spawned the popular singles “Six O’Clock News”, “One More Song The Radio Won’t Like”, and “Hockey Skates”. This drew the attention of big shots like Rolling Stone and Blender calling it the “arrival of new talent” and “one of the year’s most promising new act." Kathleen hasn’t let these remarks get to her head, putting more thought and creativity around her work, combining ambitious themes, styles, and emotions.

Grammy Award Winning singer/songwriter, Dan Wilson is known for his solo recordings as well as being the front man of alt-rock band Semisonic and as producer, producing such albums as Mike Doughty’s Haughty Melodic. Wilson’s latest solo release, Free Life, marks a new point in his songwriting. “I’ve always loved songwriting that sounded like truth,” says Wilson, “like first-person confessions, like confidences whispered in your ear. Even if I’m willing to tinker with reality and my own history, I want the song to feel true.”

Make sure not to miss this night of two phenomenal singer/songwriters. Kathleen Edwards and Dan Wilson will be sure to play a show to remember. Be there at the Fillmore @ the TLA Saturday, April 12th, 2008.

Tuesday, April 8th - Minus the Bear with Portugal. The Man and Elk

MINUS THE BEAR - SHOW IS SOLD OUT!!
Minus the Bear are back at the Fillmore @ the TLA on Tuesday, April 8th. Usually known for their eccentric song titles such as "Hey! is that a ninja up there," "Women We Haven't Met Yet," and "Thanks for the Killer Game of Crisco Twister," their new album, Planet of Ice, shows a maturity. They've progressed but without alienating their old fans, while gaining some new fans in the process. Alternative Press had this to say about the new album, "The tightly wound dance numbers are dancier ("Knights"); the slow sex jams are sexier ("White Mystery"); and new keyboardist Alex Rose gives the synths a much stronger role than ever before, both with brilliant countermelodies and sublime textures." Minus the Bear are indie-pop with a little jam band in between. Their math-rock like guitar riffs, subtle time changes, and lyrical pop hooks are highly appealing.

Their live shows are impressive, and intense. Minus the Bear's songs seem almost impossible to re-create live but these guys can do it, and they do it well. Their greatly entertaining, as any band with a sense of humor like Minus the Bear's should be, I mean even their name has an inside joke behind it. Philadelphia loves Minus the Bear, packing the house pretty much every time they're in town. This time around, opening will be Elk and Portugal. The Man. Portugal. The Man are fantastic and the Press agrees. CokeMachineGlow.com called their 2006 album, Waiter: "You Vultures!", "The first great album of the year. Flawless!" Also, come support local music by hearing Elk perform live. They claim that they will "rock your pants off!" So get your tickets soon, because they're moving fast.

Sunday April 6th - Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are back on the scene! We all remember their Grammy winning song from the 90's "Tha Crossroads." Now they have a new hit single out, "I Tried," off their latest album Strength and Loyalty. "I Tried" feat. Akon has been on heavy rotation on the airwaves and Strength and Loyalty has already been certified gold. Rolling Stone describes the album as a "guest-crammed collection that juxtaposes the MCs' double-time rhyme schemes with minimal, eclectic beats, often with thrilling results." Pretty good for a group that was the American Music Award's 1998 winner for best rap/hip-hop artist and again in 2007! It seems as though BTNH is back in full force!

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are probably one of the most underrated rap groups in hip hop history, but they're the best to millions, proven by their records sales. They're the only rap group that has worked with rap legends like Eazy-E, Tupac Shakur, and Notorius B.I.G. Many fans are calling Strength and Loyalty Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's comeback album. From record and ringtone sales as well as awards, it looks like their fans are right! Now Crayzie, Layzie, and Wish Bone are coming to Philly to create that "Cleveland magic" live at the Fillmore @ the TLA on Sunday, April 6th. So don't miss it!

Saturday April 5th - Les Savy Fav with the Big Sleep and the Dodos

LES SAVY FAV

Indie-rock New Yorkers, Les Savy Fav, are coming to Philadelphia with their well-known high energy and highly entertaining live show. Les Savy Fav have been called the best in the business by many when it comes to creating idiosyncratic pop tunes. According to the Village Voice, “Les Savy Fav is one of New York’s finest rock bands, hands down.” Let's Stay Friends is the first album they've released in 6 years! But, it was well worth the wait my friends. Pitchfork rated the album highly, with an 8.3. It's an album that throws back to their previous years by being aggressive and edgy, but each song is also more melody driven this time around. Think the Dismemberment Plan combined with Q and Not U.

THE BIG SLEEP

Saturday, April 5th at the Fillmore @ the TLA is a great line up. Not only will one of New York's best rock bands be playing, but opening for Les Savy Fav are the Big Sleep and the Dodos. The Big Sleep's live shows have been recommended left and right by critics. Their sound is heavy, hazy, and delicate. The Big Sleep are a combination of shoegazer sounds with psychedelic rock, think My Bloody Valentine with a heavier haze. Stereogum praises the Big Sleep with this description of their live show, "Sonya sings about her visions, her fears, and trouble close to home -- all while you're pumping fists and realizing suddenly your cruising well over the speed limit...check "Undying Love," "Slow Race," and the Mew-ish "So Long"/"Sleep Forever" exeunt to understand why people preach after seeing the Sleep's live show."

THE DODOS

The Dodos are really impressive as well. Haven't heard of them? Check their single "Fools" here. Their sound is like Animal Collective but not as abstract, yet still quite amazing, with a Magnetic Fields twist. Musicians and fans will walk away impressed by this two man live show. And their album? OMG their album! It's fantastic! One of the best albums of 2008 thus far. I'm not the only one that thinks so either. Pitchfork rated the Visiter an 8.5 and gave it their coveted Best New Music title, saying "Visiter ends up being one of the most welcoming (and welcome) records of 2008 so far."

This is gonne be a killer live show, from beginning to end!
